Numex-AI – Artificial Intelligence for Numismatics

Numex-AI is an innovative system developed specifically for Numex.hr, designed to solve a long-standing issue in the numismatic field – the significant loss of time caused by manual image processing and identification of coins and banknotes intended for sale.

Thanks to this system, a process that once took hours can now be completed in just a few minutes.

How does Numex-AI work?

After photographing or scanning the obverse and reverse sides of an item, the system automatically:

• crops images and removes the background,
• merges both sides into a single image with a white background,
• assigns inventory numbers (SKU),
• identifies the item and saves the data in a .tsv file (similar to a .txt file).

What still needs to be done manually?

Currently, the following steps still require manual work:

• determining the coin/banknote grade,
• photographing or scanning the item,
• placing it in a plastic bag labeled with its inventory (SKU) number,
• verifying the accuracy of the automatic identification.

Current project phase

Numex-AI is currently in the beta phase – the system is fully functional and already in daily use. Only minor technical adjustments remain before it becomes fully optimized for operation.

Areas of application

Numex-AI was primarily developed for numismatic eCommerce (web shops, eBay, auction houses), but it can also be used effectively for:

• digitalizing private and museum collections,
• documenting and recording collections for insurance or archival purposes.

The system currently performs best with modern coins and banknotes (18th–21st centuries), while support for older and ancient coins is still being refined.
